How much does chimney cleaning cost?

A standard chimney cleaning runs $299–$549 in 2026. Where you land depends on three things: what type of fireplace you have, how hard it is to get on your roof, and how much creosote has built up since the last sweep.
Answer three quick questions below and we'll show you the exact range — no email, no callback to "discuss pricing," no surprise fees on the day of service.

Here's what you'll actually pay

Chimney cleaning prices are usually written in a frustrating way: "anywhere from $150 to $900." That's technically true — but it's not helpful when you're trying to budget for your house.
So here's the straight answer for a typical annual sweep in 2026:

Open masonry fireplace — $299 to $449
Fireplace insert or wood/pellet stove — $349 to $549
Heavy creosote buildup (3+ years without cleaning) — may require chemical treatment starting at $1,500, quoted separately

You'll land at the low end if you have a single-story home, clean roof access, and you had your chimney swept last year. You'll land toward the high end if your home is two or three stories, your roof is steep or crowded with trees, or it's been a few years since the last cleaning.
The calculator below asks you these exact questions and shows you where you fall. It's the same pricing our techs use on-site.

What drives the price

What makes one chimney cleaning cost more than another

Fireplace type

$299 – $549

Open masonry, fireplace inserts, wood/pellet stoves, and prefab metal each require different brushes, rods, and sealing. Inserts take longest because the unit often has to come out.

Home stories & roof access

Аffects final price

1-story homes with clear ladder access sit at the low end of the range. Steep roofs, 2 or 3+ stories, and obstructions like trees or decks require extra setup time and safety equipment, pushing toward the high end.

Time since last cleaning

Аffects final price

Annual sweeps are quick — thin layers brush away easily. At 3+ years (or never), Stage 2 creosote thickens, and Stage 3 glazed creosote requires PCR chemical treatment ($1,500+, quoted separately) before a standard sweep can finish the job.

Found issues & add-ons

Quoted on-site

A Level 2 camera inspection (+$399) adds a full video record of the flue interior — useful after chimney fires or real-estate sales. If the tech spots a cracked crown, missing cap, or nest during the sweep, you'll get a written quote before any additional work starts."

FAQ

Common questions about chimney cleaning costs

1 icon
How much does chimney cleaning cost on average?
Most homeowners pay between $299 and $549 for a professional chimney cleaning. Open masonry fireplaces typically fall between $299–$449, while fireplace inserts and wood/pellet stoves range from $349–$549. The final price depends on your home's stories, how accessible the roof is, and how much creosote has built up since the last cleaning.
Faq Number
How often should a chimney be cleaned?
The CSIA and NFPA 211 recommend a Level 1 inspection every year. Cleaning is required when the creosote layer reaches 1/8" (about 3 mm) or sooner if you burn 3+ cords of wood per year, burn unseasoned wood, or notice odors and slow-drafting fires.
3 icon
What is included in a standard chimney sweep?
A standard sweep includes drop-cloth and HEPA-vacuum protection, brushing of the flue from base to cap, smoke chamber and firebox cleaning, ash removal, and a visual safety inspection of the damper, liner, and crown.
4 icon
Why is chimney cleaning more expensive for 2-story or 3-story homes?
Multi-story homes require taller ladders, fall protection, and more time on the roof for cap removal and top-down brushing. A 2-story home typically falls in the middle of our price range; 3-story homes with difficult access often land near the top. The calculator reflects this automatically — no surprise fees
5 icon
Do you offer a free estimate before the cleaning starts?
Yes. Our techs provide a written, on-site estimate before any work begins. The price you see in our calculator is the same range we quote — there are no hidden fees.
What if my chimney hasn't been cleaned in years
If your chimney has been unused or uncleaned for 3+ years, there's a chance of Stage 2 or Stage 3 glazed creosote — a hard, tar-like buildup that can't be removed by brushing alone. In that case, a standard sweep isn't enough; we use PCR chemical treatment (starts at $1,500, quoted separately in writing before any work begins). Our technician will identify the creosote level during the free visual inspection and walk you through all options.
