A water repellent belongs on sound, prepared masonry
Chimney waterproofing is a commonly used term for applying a penetrating water repellent to suitable brick and mortar. Brown Chimney assesses Boston chimneys before recommending this treatment. The goal is to reduce rain absorption while maintaining the masonry's ability to release moisture vapor.
Treatment does not fill failing joints, replace broken bricks or restore a cracked crown. Those defects need appropriate repair first. The condition check also considers whether water is entering at the roof connection, where a masonry coating would not solve the underlying problem.
Older chimney brickwork requires attention to existing coatings, material compatibility and drying. A painted or previously treated surface may behave differently from untreated masonry. We explain preparation and limitations rather than assume every chimney is ready for the same application.
