A cap needs to fit more than the opening

Brown Chimney installs replacement and new chimney caps for Boston properties. The right choice depends on the number of flues, their dimensions, the appliance served and the condition of the crown. We measure the chimney top before deciding how the cap should be supported and secured.

A single-flue cap protects an individual termination. A custom multi-flue cover can span more of the chimney top, provided the design maintains the required exhaust clearances and access. Bigger is not automatically better; the cover must be appropriate for the system underneath it.

On a shared chimney, identify which flues remain active before changing the top arrangement. In a designated Boston historic property, a visible exterior change may also need review. Access, appearance and the functional requirements all belong in the installation discussion.

The Work

Inspect the supporting masonry before attaching the cap

A cap fixed to loose or damaged material may not stay secure. We assess the accessible crown and top courses, explain any repair needed and specify the attachment method for the chosen cover. Screens and clearances must suit the application rather than restrict normal venting.

Once installed, the cap and its attachment are documented. We explain what it protects and what it does not: a cap can reduce direct rain entry at the flue, but deteriorated mortar, a cracked crown or failed flashing can still allow water into the chimney.

A complete water-entry plan may also involve crown repair, flashing repair or chimney waterproofing in Boston.

When should a chimney cap be replaced or added?

You may be able to spot an obvious problem from the ground. Leave roof-level assessment to the service visit, especially if the existing cover appears loose.

01

The flue opening has no protective cap.

02

The current cap is loose, missing parts or visibly corroded.

03

Rain or loose debris enters through the top of the flue.

04

Changes to active flues require a different chimney-top arrangement.

How we plan and fit your chimney cap

We measure the flue and assess the supporting top, confirm the cap design and price, then fit and document the installation. Custom fabrication and difficult access can affect scheduling.

01

Flue measurement

The flue tile is measured exactly — cap fit is everything. Multi-flue chimneys are dimensioned for a custom stainless build; single flues match standard sizing.

02

Crown & top inspection

While we're up there, the crown and top courses get checked. Anything worth watching goes in your photo report — cap and crown protect the same surface.

03

Fitting & anchoring

The cap is seated, anchored, and sealed so wind can't lift it. Galvanized steel for standard single flues; stainless only for multi-flue — no exceptions.

04

Mesh & spark arrestor check

Wire mesh on every opening — tight enough to stop animals and embers, open enough to keep the draft unrestricted.

05

Photo proof & report

The finished installation is photographed from the roof and added to your report, with the 1-year workmanship warranty in writing.

Which cap arrangement should we assess?

Select the situation that fits your home.

One exposed flue

A single-flue cap may be suitable. Send a ground-level photo if available; exact sizing and the attachment area need to be checked before the cap is selected.

Several flues in one stack

A custom cover may be appropriate. Tell us which appliances the flues serve and whether the chimney is shared so the layout can be reviewed properly.

A damaged cap with water staining nearby

We assess the cap and surrounding chimney components together. Visible cap damage does not rule out another water-entry route that also needs repair.

A clear plan for your Boston chimney project.

Roof access planned early
Tell us about roof hatches, narrow side passages, and access restrictions when you get in touch. We factor the building's layout into the proposed work and quote.
Shared-building details clarified
For a condo or multi-unit property, let us know who manages the building and which areas are shared. Access arrangements and any association approvals should be clarified before work begins.
Historic status considered
Exterior changes to a designated Boston landmark or a property in a local historic district may need preservation approval. Check the property's status and applicable requirements before scheduling exterior chimney alterations.
Scope and price set out in writing
Your quote identifies the proposed work and its price before you approve it. That gives you a clear basis for deciding what to schedule and discussing any changes to the scope.

For transparency

What this visit doesn't cover.

Crown rebuilding, brick replacement and flue repairs are separate from a standard cap installation.

Custom dimensions, special finishes and unusual roof access must be included in the written scope.

A cap addresses the chimney top; it does not resolve every source of a chimney leak.

Boston chimney cap installation FAQs

1 icon

How much does chimney cap installation cost in Boston?

Brown Chimney publishes $375–$549 for single-flue cap installations. Custom multi-flue work generally starts around $1,500–$2,500 or more. Cap dimensions, design and access determine the confirmed price after assessment.
Faq Number

Will a new cap stop my chimney leak?

It may stop direct rain entry through an uncovered flue. It will not repair damaged flashing, open mortar joints or a cracked crown. If the source is unclear, have the water-entry problem assessed before assuming a cap is the complete repair.
3 icon

Can one cap cover several flues?

A properly designed multi-flue cover can protect several terminations. We need the dimensions and information about the active systems to select a suitable arrangement. Exhaust clearances and access requirements still apply under the cover.
4 icon

Can you install a cap on an older Boston chimney?

Often, yes, after checking the crown, top courses and flue dimensions. If the attachment area is deteriorated, repair may need to come first. The cap design should also account for any applicable exterior preservation requirements.
5 icon

Is a chimney cap the same as a chimney crown?

No. The cap is the cover above a flue or chimney top. The crown is the sloped masonry top that sheds water away from the stack. Each has a different job, and either component can need attention independently.
