About this model

Overview

The Escape 1500 is the smaller of Drolet's Escape stoves, with a 1.86 cu ft firebox and up to 65,000 BTU/hr. It covers the gap between a compact stove and a full-size one: enough firebox for a seven-hour burn, without the footprint and clearances of the 2.4 cu ft models.

It is an EPA-certified non-catalytic appliance with 2.4 g/hr published particulate emissions, and takes logs up to 18 inches.

Is this right for your home?

A main living space of roughly 500 to 1,800 sq ft where a stove is wanted as real heat rather than supplemental warmth, and where a 2.4 cu ft stove would be more than the room needs.

Check before ordering

  • The heated area against the published 500 to 1,800 sq ft range.
  • Clearances to walls and combustibles, and the floor protection the manual specifies.
  • A route for the stove's own insulated chimney and the height that route gives.
  • Access to seasoned firewood cut to 18 inches or shorter.

Worth knowing

  • At 2.4 g/hr, emissions are the highest of the five stoves here — relevant if your jurisdiction sets limits stricter than the federal standard.
  • Seven hours is a published maximum; real burn time depends on the wood and how the stove is run.

Installation

The work is floor protection, clearances and the chimney. The stove stands on a listed hearth pad, keeps the manual's measured distances from walls and combustibles, and runs on its own insulated flue.

Brown Chimney can confirm where the stove can sit in the room and what the chimney route involves before it is ordered.

Service availability depends on your location.

What to check before installation

What an assessment of this model would cover:

  • Available floor area once the manual's clearances are applied to the intended spot.
  • The hearth pad or floor protection specified for the model.
  • Chimney route, height and the draft it will produce.
  • Local particulate rules, where the published 2.4 g/hr figure may matter.

Frequently asked questions

How does it compare with the Escape 1800?

The 1500 has a smaller firebox — 1.86 cu ft against 2.4 — and is rated for 500 to 1,800 sq ft rather than 500 to 2,100. It takes 18-inch logs instead of 20 and burns up to seven hours rather than eight. Choose it when the 1800 would be oversized for the space.

What does non-catalytic mean?

It burns off smoke using secondary air and firebox design rather than a catalytic combustor. There is no combustor to replace over time, and the stove is run on its air control alone.

Will it meet local emissions rules?

It is EPA certified with 2.4 g/hr published particulate emissions. Some jurisdictions set stricter limits than the federal standard, so if you are in one of those, check that figure against the local rule before ordering.
