WEATHER THAT DOESN’T QUIT
Indiana doesn’t do mild. Snow piles up, melts, and refreezes in an instant. That freeze-thaw rhythm eats at every joint and crown. In spring, the rain moves in, finding every hairline crack the ice left behind. Then summer hits — humid and heavy — quick to pull what’s left of the mortar apart. We’ve worked on chimneys from Fort Wayne to Bloomington and observed the same pattern emerge:

Why us icon
HOW WE FIX IT AND KEEP IT FIXED
THOROUGH INSPECTIONS

We inspect your chimney, top down, inside out. We’ve been doing this for over four decades, and we know how to thoroughly check the crown, liner, and flashing. With both manual labor and professional tools, we test the draft and moisture levels inside the flue. If something’s cracked or leaking, you’ll see it in the photos.

REPOINTING AND LINER WORK

Repointing and sealing are a must in Indiana.

We do so with high-grade materials to ensure breathable waterproofing so it stays solid through another winter.

If a liner’s worn or unsafe, we reline it with materials built for real burn cycles, not just one season of use.

CROWNS AND CAPS

Crowns and caps take the worst beating in Indiana weather. We rebuild crowns to improve slope and drainage, allowing meltwater to run off instead of freezing in place. Missing or rusted caps get replaced with stainless steel or copper. We fit them tight to keep out rain, leaves, and the occasional nesting raccoon.

REBUILD AND FIREPLACE INSTALLS

There’s the reality that some chimneys can’t be saved. When that happens, we carefully remove them, protecting the roof deck and leaving the area ready for rebuilding.

And for new systems, we install wood or gas fireplaces, meeting Indiana’s building code and NFPA 211 standards.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1 icon
What areas do you service in Indiana?
Brown Chimney runs Indiana out of Carmel, covering Indianapolis, Fishers, Zionsville, Westfield, and the surrounding communities. If you're nearby and unsure whether you're in range, a quick call confirms it.
Faq Number
What does Indiana weather actually do to a chimney?
Freeze-thaw does the cracking, spring rain finds the cracks, and summer humidity pulls the mortar apart. Three seasons of damage, one chimney. It's why a crown that looked fine in October is often the first thing we find in March.
3 icon
How much does chimney service cost in Indiana?
Pricing follows the chimney, not the zip code. Price a cleaning or an inspection in about 30 seconds — same figures our Carmel crew quotes on-site.
4 icon
My ceiling is stained near the fireplace. What's the cause?
Almost always the crown or the flashing. Meltwater sits where the slope is wrong, freezes, and works into the masonry — then shows up on a ceiling months later. Crown repair is priced by the crown's size, so catching it early is the difference between a repair and a rebuild.
5 icon
When should I book?
Early fall, before the heating season. Anything found in September is a repair; the same crack in February, after the freeze has worked on it, is often a rebuild. Reach out and we'll get an Indiana visit on the calendar.
