A chimney cap is the fitted metal cover at the top of your flue — and it's the cheapest insurance the system has. It keeps rain out of the flue (where water otherwise soaks masonry and rusts the damper), keeps animals from nesting in the off-season, blocks leaves and debris, and its wire mesh works as a spark arrestor in the other direction. An uncapped flue is an open pipe to the sky: every storm, squirrel, and October leaf fall ends up in your chimney.

What a cap installation actually does.
Most of the expensive chimney damage we repair started at an open or failed cap. Water is the number one enemy of masonry — and the flue is a direct channel into the heart of the structure. A correctly sized, sealed cap closes that channel for a few hundred dollars. It's the difference between water shedding off the top and water working through the system for years.
Installation is precise or it's pointless: the cap is measured to your flue tile, anchored and sealed so wind can't lift it, and meshed so animals can't enter and sparks can't exit. Galvanized steel is the standard for single-flue caps; multi-flue and chase covers are stainless only — no exceptions, because they fail faster in anything less. If the crown around the flue shows cracking while we're up there, it goes in your photo report with a separate quote — caps and crown repairs protect the same top surface and often make sense together.

What are the signs you need a new chimney cap?
Cap failure is easy to spot once you know where to look — most of these are visible from the ground or announce themselves from inside the flue. If any sound familiar, the fix is a single visit.
