Tuckpointing is the replacement of failed mortar joints — grinding or chiselling out the deteriorated material and repacking the joint with fresh mortar. Mortar is softer than brick on purpose: it's the sacrificial layer that weathers so the brick doesn't. When it recedes, water reaches the brick faces, and the damage stops being cheap. What tuckpointing actually does.
Every masonry chimney has a clock on it, and the mortar is the clock. Rain, freeze-thaw, and heat cycling work the joints a little more each season. Once the joint recedes past the brick face, water sits against the brick instead of running off it — and brick that stays wet is brick that spalls. Repointing resets the surface before that transfer happens.
The job is only as good as the prep: joints ground out until sound material is reached, then repacked in layers and tooled to the original profile. A smear of mortar over crumbling material looks fine for a season and fails by the next. Once fresh joints are in, sealing them is worth considering — chimney waterproofing with a vapor-permeable sealer keeps water out while letting the masonry breathe, and it's cheapest to do while we're already there.
