The craft, done properly
GAS FIREPLACE REPAIR IN DETROIT, MI

A great many gas appliances in this city sit inside a fireplace that was built for something else. A log set dropped into an original masonry firebox is a gas system inside a masonry system, and a fault can belong to either — the burner and the pilot are one conversation, the flue above them is another entirely.

Said plainly before anything else: gas fireplace service, repair, and parts replacement carry no workmanship warranty. None on the labor, none on the parts. Warranty applies to new installations only. It is on the estimate, and the technician repeats it before starting.

Pricing is component-led. Diagnosis and repair is $249 to $449. A pilot assembly on a gas log set is $449 to $649; on a sealed direct-vent unit it is $849 to $1,195, because the system has to be opened and its integrity restored. A thermocouple is $449, a spark ignitor is $449, a control module is $1,195, and a remote installation is $895. Annual service and cleaning runs $249 to $449. Method on our gas fireplace repair service page.

The Work

Two systems, one symptom.

A unit that will not stay lit can be a weak thermocouple. It can equally be a draft problem starting well above the firebox, in masonry that has nothing to do with gas. The description over the phone cannot tell those apart, which is why the technician runs the appliance and works outward from what he sees rather than arriving with a part already chosen.

Where the flue turns out to be the cause, that is a separate conversation with separate pricing. Where an ageing unit has several components going at once, a new installation carries a workmanship warranty on the labor that gas repair never will — worth seeing before you spend on parts.

Gas fireplace service in Ann Arbor and gas fireplace service in Troy are run separately, and the full state coverage is on the Michigan page. Local services are on the Detroit page.

When to book

Signs a Detroit gas fireplace needs service.

Gas faults are usually specific, so an accurate description on the phone genuinely helps. One item on this list is not a booking at all.

01

The pilot will not light, or lights and goes straight out

02

The unit ignites but shuts off after a few minutes

03

The remote or wall switch no longer controls the fireplace

04

Soot or dark staining on the glass front

05

A smell of gas around the unit at any time

06

It has been more than 12 months since the last service

If you smell gas, call your gas utility before you call anyone else. That is an emergency rather than an appointment and it does not wait for a service window. Everything above it is a scheduled visit.

"

Most gas fireplaces we're called out to aren't finished — they need a thermocouple, a sensor cleaned, or a pilot assembly. That's a few hundred dollars and one visit, not a replacement unit.

The Brown Chimney Standard · Detroit

A brick city, and we work on the brick.

Built in 1939, on average
Almost six in ten Detroit houses went up before 1950 and four in five before 1960. The majority carry brick exteriors, and among the Depression-era stock nearly all of them do.
The chimney is part of the structure
On a solid masonry house the chimney was laid up in the same courses, from the same material, at the same time. That makes repair structural work rather than a cosmetic patch on a veneer.
Matched, not skimmed
Mortar mixed to the existing color and grain, joints tooled to the existing profile, and brick whose face has broken away replaced one unit at a time. A repointing job should disappear into the wall, not announce itself from the sidewalk.
Written, photo-backed report
Every job ends with a PDF. Great for insurance, great for selling the home, great for peace of mind.
Interactive · the ignition sequence

Your gas fireplace isn't dead — one link in the chain is.

Every gas fireplace lights the same way: call for heat, spark, pilot, flame proved, valve opens, burner runs. When it fails, it fails at one specific step. Tell us what you're seeing and we'll play the sequence, stop it where yours stops, and name the component — with the price we actually charge for it.

VENT GAS VALVE MODULE THERMOCOUPLE / FLAME SENSOR
  • Call for heat — switch, remote, or thermostat
  • Spark ignitor fires at the pilot hood
  • Pilot flame lights and holds
  • !Flame never gets proved — valve closes
  • 5Main gas valve opens
  • 6Burner runs, vent carries exhaust out
Sequence stops at step 4 of 6
Most likely component

Thermocouple / flame sensor

The thermocouple sits in the pilot flame and generates the tiny current that tells the valve a flame is actually burning. When it weakens, the valve does exactly what it is designed to do and shuts the gas off. It is the single most common gas fireplace fault, and it is a one-visit part.

  • Thermocouple / flame sensor$449

Failed thermocouple replaced with the correct part for your valve, pilot flame position corrected, then held and re-tested through several full cycles.

Worth knowing

Most gas fireplaces we are called out to are not finished — they need one component, not a replacement unit. Where a repair does start approaching the cost of a new insert, we price both and let you decide rather than selling parts into a dying appliance.

Gas service and parts replacement carry no workmanship warranty — components carry the manufacturer's warranty where one applies. This is a guide, not a diagnosis. Gas faults are confirmed by testing on site, and the part plus labour is quoted in writing before anything is ordered. Brown Chimney · 1-888-666-0002

What to expect

What happens during a Detroit gas service call.

The appliance gets run before it gets touched. Diagnosis, repair, and a full operational test at the end are the shape of the visit, and most finish in one appointment. The fault and the part fitted both go into the written record, which matters more than usual on work that carries no warranty.

01

Arrival & gas safety check

Before any panel comes off, the technician checks for gas odour, tests the connection, and confirms the appliance is safe to work on. If there is an active leak, the gas gets shut off and the utility called — that comes before any repair conversation.

02

Fault diagnosis

Pilot, thermocouple, ignitor, control module, valve, and venting are tested in sequence to find what has actually failed. A gas fireplace that won't stay lit has half a dozen possible causes, and guessing at parts is how homeowners end up paying twice.

03

Parts confirmed in writing

You get the failed component named, the part price, and the labour quoted before anything is ordered or fitted. Gas service and parts replacement carry no workmanship warranty from us — you are told that up front, not after the invoice.

04

Repair or replacement

The failed component is replaced with the correct part for your appliance — thermocouple, pilot assembly, spark ignitor, or control module. Where the unit is beyond economical repair, we say so and price the replacement instead of selling parts into a dying appliance.

05

Operational test & handover

Ignition, flame pattern, valve response, safety shutoff, and venting are all tested before we leave. You get shown how the system behaves when it is working properly, so the next fault is something you can describe on the phone.

For transparency

What is not covered here — and this is the important one.

Any warranty at all. Gas service, repair, and parts replacement carry no workmanship warranty. Third mention on this page, because it is the assumption people arrive with.

The masonry above the appliance. A draft fault originating in the flue is a chimney job, and it gets quoted as one rather than absorbed into a service call.

Gas fitting. Pipework and connections are licensed trade work under permit, and they sit outside a repair visit entirely.

FAQs

Common questions about gas fireplace repair in Detroit

1 icon

Is the repair covered by a warranty?

No. Gas service, repair, and parts replacement carry no workmanship warranty, on the labor or the parts. Warranty applies to new installations only. It appears three times on this page because it is the assumption almost everyone arrives with.
Faq Number

Our gas logs sit in the original fireplace. Does the chimney still matter?

It matters as much as the appliance. The burner is gas but the flue above it is a hundred-year-old masonry shaft, and a venting problem up there will present at the hearth as though the unit has failed. The visit looks at both rather than stopping at the burner.
3 icon

Why can you not tell us the problem over the phone?

Because the symptoms overlap. A unit that lights and drops out could be one small component or it could be the flue, and those are different trades at very different prices. A phone diagnosis leads to the wrong part arriving, which wastes your morning and ours.
4 icon

The glass has gone dark. Is that a fault?

Usually deposits rather than damage, and it is what the annual service exists to clear. If it returns quickly after cleaning, that points at combustion rather than housekeeping and gets investigated as its own question.
5 icon

Should an older unit be repaired or replaced?

Count the failures. One component is a repair. Several at once on an ageing appliance is the moment to price a replacement instead, partly on cost and partly because a new installation is warranted labor while this work is not.
