The first thing worth saying is what does not change. On an original masonry fireplace the surround stays, the mantel stays, and the brickwork stays exactly as built. An insert sits inside the existing opening. For anyone in a house where the fireplace is one of the reasons they bought it, that is usually the deciding detail.
What changes is the physics. An open firebox sends most of its heat up the flue and pulls already-warmed room air after it. A closed appliance keeps its combustion air separate, radiates into the room, and vents through a liner sized to it. That is the difference between a fireplace you look at and one you heat with.

An electric insert is $4,495, a wood-burning insert is $11,995, a gas insert is $12,995, a built-in gas fireplace is $13,695, a wood stove is $13,295, and a pellet stove is $15,595. Each figure covers the unit allowance, all venting, a stainless liner where required, and the electrical or gas subcontractor allowance. Where a subcontractor's real cost exceeds its allowance the difference is billed and you are told first; upgrades cost the difference in list price only; and we do not fit customer-supplied units. What the flue allows, the appliance has to respect.
The chimney sets the constraints, not the catalogue. Diameter, height, condition, and what the flue was built to carry all decide which appliances are genuinely available to you — which is why the flue is evaluated before anything is chosen rather than after a unit has been ordered.
Most of what goes wrong with an installation was settled before the first fire: a flue never sized to the appliance, a liner that got skipped, clearances treated as guidance. None of it shows in the first month. All of it shows by the third winter. One point belongs in the gas-or-wood decision as well — the installation carries a workmanship warranty, but gas service afterwards carries none.

When to book

For transparency
What is outside the installed figure.
Carpentry, tile, and finish work around a built-in gas fireplace. The appliance and its venting are in the package; a new surround, mantel, or hearth extension is quoted separately.
Subcontractor cost above the stated allowance. Electrical and gas allowances are named up front, and where the real number runs higher you hear it before the work rather than on the invoice.
Units you supply yourself. We do not fit appliances we did not source, because the workmanship warranty cannot cover something whose history we cannot verify.

Will an insert ruin the look of an original fireplace?

On a fireplace that is original to the house it is worth seeing the unit in place before committing, and we would rather have that conversation than fit something you end up regretting.
What does a wood insert cost installed?
$11,995 complete — unit allowance, stainless liner, every venting connection, and the electrical subcontractor allowance included. A gas insert is $12,995 on the same terms, and moving up a model costs the difference in list price and nothing more.
Does this need historic district approval?
It depends on whether the change is visible from outside. Work confined to the inside of an existing firebox generally does not. New venting through a wall or roof is an exterior alteration on a designated property and needs a certificate first. We establish which applies before anything is booked.
Why will you not fit a unit we buy ourselves?
Because the workmanship warranty covers labor on appliances we sourced. There is no honest way to stand behind an installation when the appliance arrived from somewhere we cannot verify, and we would rather decline the job than sell a warranty that means nothing.
How do we choose between gas and wood?
Start with the flue, since it may narrow the choice for you. Beyond that, gas lights instantly and runs clean but its service and repair afterwards carry no workmanship warranty. Wood needs annual sweeping and a properly sized liner, and the ongoing work on it is warranted.
