Look at the top of an older brick stack in this city and there is frequently more than one opening. Each of those is a separate flue doing a separate job, and each is cleaned as its own item at its own price. The fireplace flue is simply the one people think to book.
An open masonry fireplace is $299 to $449. A wood stove, pellet stove, or fireplace insert is $349 to $549, because the appliance has to come away from the wall before the flue can be properly reached. Furnace and water heater flues are $299 and have their own schedule entirely — in housing that has outlived several heating systems, that is often the flue nobody has thought about in decades.
Whichever flue is being swept, the work is the same discipline: full brushing, smoke chamber and firebox cleaning, drop cloths, a vacuum, and a written report with photographs. Creosote is what wood smoke leaves when it cools before it escapes, and at an eighth of an inch it stops being residue and becomes fuel inside a heat column. The Work
Three stages, and only two of them brush out.
Stage 1 is a light soot and Stage 2 is dark and flaky. Both come away mechanically. Stage 3 is glazed — hardened, tarry, and effectively fused to the flue wall — and a brush passes straight over it. Removing that takes PCR chemical treatment from $1,500, applied on one visit and mechanically cleared twenty-four hours later, with the fireplace unused in between and the price agreed in writing beforehand.
Reaching Stage 3 is about how a fire was burned rather than how long ago. Unseasoned wood, slow smouldering fires, and a flue that never warms properly all drive deposits toward glazing. The stage is established during the visual check, before any brush goes in, so nobody is surprised by a second visit. How often a chimney genuinely needs sweeping follows the same logic.

Glazed Stage 3 deposits. A brush cannot lift them. PCR treatment starts at $1,500, runs over two visits, and is priced in writing before anything begins.

Common questions about chimney sweeping in Detroit
Our chimney has two openings at the top. Does that mean two jobs?
It means more than one flue in one stack, and each is cleaned and priced separately. Mention it at booking rather than at the door — it changes the time on site and the figure, and neither of us wants to renegotiate on the doorstep.
Does the furnace flue need doing as well?
It has its own interval and its own $299 price. It is doing real work and collecting real deposits, and in older housing here it is very often the flue that has gone longest without attention.
How often should the fireplace flue be swept?
An inspection every year regardless of use, and a cleaning once the creosote layer reaches an eighth of an inch. A household burning through a full heating season usually gets there within twelve months.
We have a wood stove, not an open fireplace. Same price?
No — $349 to $549. The appliance normally has to be drawn away from the wall to reach the flue and connector properly, and the pipe and collar joints are inspected while it is out. That is part of the price rather than an addition to it.
What makes a job the $1,500 treatment rather than the $299 one?
The state of the deposits, not the size of the chimney. Ordinary creosote brushes out in a single visit. Glazed Stage 3 has to be chemically broken down first, which means two visits twenty-four hours apart with the fireplace out of use between them.
