Most of what goes wrong with a fireplace installation was decided before anything was lit — a flue that was never sized to the appliance, a liner that was skipped, clearances that were treated as guidance. None of it shows on day one, and all of it shows in year three.
An open masonry fireplace in a 1920s house is an inefficient way to heat a room; much of the warmth leaves up the flue along with the air the room has already heated. An insert closes that system and vents through a properly sized liner. Gas units are different again — they install cleanly, and it is worth knowing before you choose one that gas service afterward carries no workmanship warranty, even though the installation itself does.
