Here's How We Price Chimney Relining

Relining installs a new liner inside an existing chimney. The price depends on the system your appliance needs, the measured height and the work required to prepare the flue. These are Brown Chimney's service prices in U.S. dollars.

  • Stainless steel liner installation: $1,750 plus $125 per foot of chimney height, with a $3,500 minimum. Difficult access adds $500.
  • Aluminum liner installation: $2,500 up to 20 feet, $3,500 over 20 through 30 feet, and $4,500 over 30 feet. Available only for compatible gas appliances.
  • Preparation, when needed: existing liner removal is $700–$1,900; clay flue tile removal is $800–$2,500; pour-down liner insulation is $800–$1,600. Each is assessed and quoted separately.

For example, a 25-foot stainless steel installation with standard access is $1,750 + (25 × $125) = $4,875. Difficult access brings that installation line to $5,375. These figures exclude separately required removal, preparation, insulation, repairs and permit work.

Your written quote identifies which items apply to your chimney. If unexpected conditions change the scope after work begins, we document them with photos and obtain your approval before carrying out additional work.

What drives the price

What Changes the Cost of Chimney Liner Installation?

Appliance and Liner Material

Material must match the appliance

The appliance determines the liner's required material and size. Our stainless steel installation service covers liners rated for wood-burning appliances. Aluminum is an option only for compatible gas systems. The selected liner must meet the appliance and liner manufacturers' requirements.

Measured Chimney Height

Stainless steel: $125 per foot + base

For stainless steel, we add $125 per foot to the $1,750 base, then apply the $3,500 minimum. Aluminum installations use the three height bands shown above. The technician confirms the measurement on site; the number of stories alone does not establish the price.

Roof and Chimney Access

Stainless steel hard access: +$500

Steep or fragile roofs, tall chimneys and restricted ladder placement can make installation more difficult. Stainless steel installations carry a $500 hard-access charge where applicable. If a ladder cannot be used safely, required lift or scaffolding equipment is assessed separately and itemized at $1,250.

Flue Condition and Preparation

Additional work quoted separately

A failed liner may need removal, clay tiles may need clearing to make room, or the selected system may require insulation. Smoke chamber or crown repairs can also affect the scope. Review our chimney inspection costs when planning the assessment that identifies this work.

What you get

What's Included in Your Chimney Liner Installation?

Both installation services include the liner, its top plate, liner cap and appliance connector. The stainless steel service also includes a thimble. We size the system for the appliance and install it to the manufacturer's instructions and applicable local code.

Our chimney liner and relining service explains how the existing flue is assessed and the replacement system selected.

The included cap is the liner-system cap. A separate chimney rain cap is quoted only if needed. Existing liner removal, clay tile removal, pour-down insulation, smoke chamber parging and crown repairs are separate when required.

Where a permit is necessary, our $1,200 permit service is itemized separately and covers the application, filing and inspection coordination.

Our workmanship warranty covers defects in the labor we perform. Products carry their manufacturer's warranty; pre-existing conditions and damage from use, weather or other trades are outside workmanship coverage.

FAQ

Common Questions About Chimney Liner Costs

1 icon
How much does chimney relining cost at Brown Chimney?
Stainless steel liner installation is $1,750 plus $125 per foot of chimney height, with a $3,500 minimum. Difficult access adds $500. Aluminum installation for compatible gas appliances is $2,500 up to 20 feet, $3,500 over 20 through 30 feet, and $4,500 over 30 feet. Required preparation and related work are separate.
Faq Number
Can I choose an aluminum liner instead of stainless steel?
Only if the appliance and liner specifications allow it. Aluminum is for compatible gas appliances, not wood-burning equipment, and it is not suitable for every gas system. For example, DuraVent's aluminum liner instructions exclude wood-burning appliances and certain gas categories. We confirm compatibility before quoting the installation.
3 icon
Does the installation price include removing the old liner?
No. Existing liner removal is a separate $700–$1,900 service, based on its condition and access. It includes removing the old liner, top plate and cap, hauling them away and checking the flue afterward. Clay tile removal is a different preparation service, priced at $800–$2,500 when needed. Neither is automatically required on every installation.
4 icon
Is chimney liner insulation included?
Pour-down liner insulation is separate at $800–$1,600, depending on chimney height and flue size. Whether insulation is required depends on the liner's listing and installation conditions. Required insulation cannot be omitted to lower the price. Openings that could let the insulating mix escape must be sealed first, with necessary chimney repair work quoted separately.
5 icon
Can a chimney liner be repaired instead of replaced?
Sometimes. A sound liner with a damaged cap or top plate may need only a component repair. Problems within the flue require an assessment of their extent and suitable repair methods. Replacing a top plate does not repair a failed liner farther down the chimney. The findings determine whether targeted work, relining or masonry repairs are appropriate.
Do I need a camera inspection before relining?
A camera scan can reveal internal conditions that are not visible from the fireplace or ground. Our chimney inspection service can establish the appropriate assessment before a liner is selected. A camera scan added to another visit is not the same service as a complete Level 2 inspection. Inspection scope and fees are confirmed separately.
