The craft, done properly
DRYER VENT CLEANING IN DETROIT, MI

The price is $249 for a standard ground-floor wall exit and up to $449 where the duct exits through the roof, runs longer than twenty-five feet, turns several corners, or has heavy buildup. The service covers lint removal along the entire path from the machine to the exterior cap, an airflow test before and after, an inspection of that cap, and reconnection of the vent.

Lint is nothing like household dust. It is fine, dry, and combustible, accumulating inside a duct that heats every time the machine runs. A restricted vent forces the dryer to run longer and hotter to finish the same load, which is the condition that makes the accumulation dangerous rather than merely annoying.

There is a detail specific to a masonry house. Where the duct passes through a solid brick wall, the penetration is a hole in the masonry — and a hole that has lost its mortar, its sleeve, or its exterior cap is a masonry problem rather than a duct problem. We check it while we are there, because water getting into a wall through a vent opening does the same damage as water getting in anywhere else. Method on our dryer vent cleaning page.

The Work

The hole in the wall is part of the job.

On a frame house the vent goes through siding. On a brick house it goes through the wall itself. That opening was cut once and has been weathering ever since, and where the mortar around it has failed or the exterior cap has come away, the duct is no longer the only thing needing attention.

The rest of the visit is straightforward and measurable. Airflow is read before the work and again after it, so the improvement is a figure rather than a reassurance. A flap that has stopped lifting, a screen that should never have been fitted, or something nesting behind the cap will all put the duct back where it started inside a season — each of those gets flagged and priced on its own line, and the chimney flue is frequently booked at the same visit.

Dryer vent cleaning in Ann Arbor and dryer vent cleaning in Troy are run separately, and the full state service area is on the Michigan page. Everything local is on the Detroit page.

When to book

Signs a Detroit dryer vent needs clearing.

All of these show up at the appliance rather than in the duct, which is why the appliance usually takes the blame and occasionally gets replaced for nothing.

01

Clothes take more than one cycle to dry

02

The dryer or the laundry room feels unusually hot during a cycle

03

A burning or scorched smell while the machine runs

04

Lint visible around the outside vent or the dryer door

05

The exterior vent flap does not open when the dryer is on

06

It has been more than 12 months since the last cleaning

Two of these do not belong together. A scorched smell is a stop-now signal and should not wait for a scheduled visit. Everything above it is an appointment.

Most gas fireplaces we're called out to aren't finished — they need a thermocouple, a sensor cleaned, or a pilot assembly. That's a few hundred dollars and one visit, not a replacement unit.

The Brown Chimney Standard · Detroit

A brick city, and we work on the brick.

Built in 1939, on average
Almost six in ten Detroit houses went up before 1950 and four in five before 1960. The majority carry brick exteriors, and among the Depression-era stock nearly all of them do.
The chimney is part of the structure
On a solid masonry house the chimney was laid up in the same courses, from the same material, at the same time. That makes repair structural work rather than a cosmetic patch on a veneer.
Matched, not skimmed
Mortar mixed to the existing color and grain, joints tooled to the existing profile, and brick whose face has broken away replaced one unit at a time. A repointing job should disappear into the wall, not announce itself from the sidewalk.
Written, photo-backed report
Every job ends with a PDF. Great for insurance, great for selling the home, great for peace of mind.

Is your dryer vent a fire risk?

Dryer vents cause about 2,900 house fires a year in the US. Three questions and we'll tell you where you stand.

Clean this week
91/ 100 attention score

This is the fire-risk category

Long dry times, hot exteriors, or burning smells all mean lint is packed in the duct. Rotary brushing plus HEPA vacuum is the only method that clears the full run.

Recommended next step
Full brush + HEPA vacuum clean

Tailored to your answers about your chimney.

  • Full duct rotary brushed
  • HEPA vacuum from both ends
  • Airflow tested after service

What to expect

What happens during a Detroit vent visit.

Under an hour on a straightforward run, longer where the duct is long or exits above the roofline. Both ends have to be reachable, so tell us which floor the laundry is on when you book. On a masonry wall the exterior opening gets looked at as well as cleared, and if it needs work you hear about it before anything is quoted.

01

Airflow test — before

The run is measured at the exterior cap before anything is touched. This number is your baseline — and your proof at the end.

02

Disconnect & access

The dryer is pulled, the transition hose disconnected, and both ends of the duct opened for full-run access.

03

Rotary brush cleaning

Brushes sized to the duct work the entire run from both directions, with vacuum extraction capturing lint as it breaks loose — including the bends where clogs hide.

04

Cap inspection & clearing

The exterior cap is cleared and checked — a crushed or screen-blocked cap chokes airflow as badly as lint does.

05

Reconnect & airflow test — after

The vent is properly reconnected and the airflow measured again. Before-and-after numbers go in your report: the restriction is gone, and you can see it.

For transparency

What this visit does not cover.

Anything inside the machine. We clear the duct, reconnect it, and measure the result. A dryer with a failing element or motor needs an appliance technician.

Masonry repair at the wall penetration. Where the mortar around the opening has failed, that is quoted as its own line and it is a masonry job rather than a duct job.

Rerouting the duct. A run built too long, crushed behind the appliance, or made from flexible foil is a rebuild rather than a cleaning, and it is quoted after we have seen it.

FAQs

Common questions about dryer vent cleaning in Detroit

1 icon

How often should this be done?

Once a year for most households, more often where the run is long or the machine works hard. The interval follows the shape of the duct rather than the calendar — a long run with several bends fills far faster than a short wall exit.
Faq Number

Our vent goes straight through a brick wall. Does that matter?

It matters more than people expect. The opening is a hole in the masonry, and once the mortar around it or the exterior cap has gone, water uses it the same way it would use any other failed joint. We check the penetration while we are there rather than only the duct.
3 icon

Why do clothes come out damp after a full cycle?

Almost always a restricted vent. The machine cannot expel moist air fast enough, so the cycle ends with the load still wet — and that is also the state in which a dryer runs hottest, which is the part that matters.
4 icon

What does the airflow reading tell us?

How much of the duct is actually working. Taken before and after, it turns the result into a number rather than an assurance, and on a badly restricted run the difference is obvious enough that most people ask to see it twice.
5 icon

Can this be done on the same visit as the chimney?

Usually, and it is worth asking. Both need a technician in the house and often outside at height, so booking them together saves an appointment.
