The Work
Matching is the craft. Packing is the labor.
Anyone can put mortar in a joint. Getting it to disappear into a hundred-year-old wall takes matching the color, matching the grain, cutting to the right depth, and finishing to the profile the original mason used. That is what separates a repair that ages with the building from one that announces itself permanently.
Sequence is the other half of the value. Repointing addresses water entering through the joints, which only helps if that is where the water is entering — where the crown has opened up, it is arriving from above and new mortar changes nothing. And sealing the masonry comes after, never instead, because a sealer over a failing joint holds the water inside the wall.

When to book
Signs a Detroit chimney needs repointing.

Deteriorated mortar is ground or chiselled out until sound material is reached, so the new mortar has something real to key into rather than sitting on crumbling sand.

Joints are repacked with refractory-grade mortar and tooled to match your chimney's existing joint profile — so the repair reads as part of the original wall, not a patch.

Cleanup, photos & next step
Brick faces are cleaned down and before-and-after photos added to your report. All labor carries a 1-year workmanship warranty, and we'll tell you whether waterproofing is worth doing while the joints are fresh.
For transparency
Not included in repointing.
Replacing units. Where faces have broken away rather than joints failing, those bricks come out and go back on their own line.
The crown overhead. If water is arriving from the top, new mortar beneath it accomplishes nothing, and we would rather say so than take the smaller job.
Filing with the Commission. We prepare the mortar specification, the profile detail, and the photographs; submitting and waiting on a decision is a separate process.

Only if the joints are where the water is getting in. If it is arriving through a cracked crown or failed flashing, new mortar changes nothing at all. Establishing which is what the inspection is for, and paying for the wrong repair is the expensive mistake here.
