CHIMNEY CARE FOR BOSTON’S HOMES
Boston chimney work starts with understanding the building. A brick rowhouse, a triple-decker and a detached home can have very different roof access, flue layouts and masonry conditions. Rain and winter freezing can worsen cracks and open mortar joints, while deposits inside a working flue can affect performance.

We assess the chimney and the connected fireplace or appliance, then explain what needs cleaning, repair or closer inspection. For condo or shared-building work, tell us who manages roof access and authorizes work on the chimney.

THE RIGHT WORK FOR YOUR CHIMNEY
CHIMNEY SWEEPING & INSPECTIONS

A chimney sweep removes soot and deposits; an inspection checks the system’s condition. We explain which service fits your fireplace and when a closer look inside the flue is needed. Photos and findings help you understand the next step, whether that is cleaning, repair or further investigation.

BRICKWORK & MORTAR REPAIRS

Older masonry needs repair materials suited to the existing brick or stone. We assess worn joints, damaged bricks and unstable sections before recommending repointing or rebuilding.

Mortar compatibility matters alongside its appearance, helping the repair work with the chimney’s original construction.

CHIMNEY LEAKS, CAPS & CROWNS

Flashing protects the roof-to-chimney joint, the crown sheds water from the masonry, and a suitable cap helps protect the flue opening. We investigate these entry points before proposing repairs.

Water-repellent treatment is considered alongside the chimney’s condition and any underlying defects.

FIREPLACE INSTALLATION & UPGRADES

Planning a fireplace or insert? The opening, venting route, liner requirements and clearances help determine what can be installed. We define the equipment and connection work before installation. For a chimney removal project, the scope also needs to address the affected structure and roof opening.

HOW WE PLAN YOUR CHIMNEY WORK

UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM FIRST
Tell us what you have noticed, how you use the fireplace and whether the building has access restrictions. We review the relevant parts of the system and document the findings. You receive a clear explanation of the condition, the recommended work and anything that needs further assessment before a repair can be specified.
AGREE ON THE SCOPE BEFORE WORK
Your written proposal should make the job understandable: what is included, what the work addresses and how access will be arranged. For an older home or shared property, material choices and approvals may also affect the plan. We discuss those requirements and explain any proposed changes before additional work begins.

FAQ

BOSTON CHIMNEY SERVICE QUESTIONS

1 icon
Does Brown Chimney serve homes in Boston?
Yes. Brown Chimney serves Boston through its Massachusetts team, based in Burlington. Call 781-547-7784 or request an appointment with your property address and service needs. For a condo or multi-unit building, include any access arrangements and the contact responsible for authorizing work.
Faq Number
How much does chimney service cost in Boston?
Brown Chimney’s published prices are $49 for a standard Level 1 chimney inspection, $149 for a Level 2 camera inspection, and $299–$549 for a standard chimney cleaning. Fireplace type, roof access and deposit levels affect cleaning costs; repairs and heavy creosote treatment are quoted separately. Check the chimney cleaning cost calculator and chimney inspection pricing, then confirm the scope and price for your property before booking.
3 icon
How often should a chimney be inspected and cleaned?
Arrange a chimney inspection at least once a year and cleaning when deposits or other conditions make it necessary. This follows CSIA’s guidance based on NFPA 211. How often you burn, the appliance and what is found during inspection determine the cleaning schedule. An unused chimney can still develop blockages or deterioration.
4 icon
Why does my chimney leak when it rains?
Water can enter through damaged flashing, a cracked crown, open mortar joints or problems around the chimney top. A stain indoors does not identify which component has failed. Assessment should establish where the water is entering before crown work, flashing repair or waterproofing is recommended.
5 icon
Do chimney repairs on a historic Boston property need approval?
Exterior chimney work on an individually landmarked property or a home in a local historic district may need approval from Boston’s preservation commission, in addition to any building permit. Requirements depend on the property and proposed changes. Check the designation and required approvals before repointing, rebuilding or changing visible chimney features.
